A 4D ultrasound is a 3D ultrasound shown in real time. Instead of one still picture, you watch your baby’s three-dimensional face and body move live as they yawn, stretch or bring a hand to their mouth. In short, 2D is the familiar black-and-white outline, 3D is a still image with depth, 4D is 3D in motion, and 5D/HD adds lighting and shading for a more lifelike look.

At Moms To Be Ultrasound in Orlando, all of these are elective keepsake scans. They complement, never replace, the diagnostic ultrasounds your provider orders. Here is a plain-English breakdown of each type so you know what to expect.

What is a 4D ultrasound?

Think of 4D as a 3D picture with time added as the “fourth dimension.” The machine keeps building three-dimensional images so quickly that they play like a live video. You can see your baby’s expressions and movements as they happen.

This is the scan most parents imagine when they picture an elective ultrasound. It’s the moment the whole family leans toward the screen because the baby just smiled, frowned or kicked.

What is a 2D ultrasound, and when is it used?

A 2D ultrasound is the flat, black-and-white, cross-section view used in most medical scans. It shows outlines and internal structures, not the surface of the baby’s face.

In early pregnancy, 2D is the best tool for a first look. Our Early Connection Ultrasound ($79, best between 6 and 11 weeks) uses 2D so you can hear the heartbeat, see your baby for the first time and get an estimated due date and gestational age. When possible, we add a sneak peek in 5D/HD. You leave with 6 printed photos plus all digital images and videos.

What is a 3D sonogram?

A 3D sonogram (sonogram and ultrasound mean the same thing here) collects many 2D slices and combines them into a single image with depth. The result is a still picture that shows the shape of your baby’s face, hands and feet.

3D images are snapshots. They make great printed keepsakes and are what you’ll often see framed on a nursery shelf. Take a look at our gallery of 3D/4D and HD images to see real examples.

What is a 5D ultrasound, and what does HD mean?

“5D” isn’t a literal fifth dimension. The term generally describes 3D/4D imaging with advanced rendering that adds realistic lighting, shadows and skin-like texture. That’s why you’ll often see it called 5D/HD. The images look softer and more lifelike than standard 3D.

Our 5D/HD sessions use a GE Voluson E8, an FDA-approved prescription ultrasound device. Our Sweet Peek and Premium packages are both 5D/HD experiences.

4D vs 5D ultrasound: what’s the difference?

Both show your baby live. The difference is in the rendering:

  • 4D shows real-time movement in 3D.
  • 5D/HD shows that same real-time view with enhanced lighting and detail, so the face looks more natural.

When people search “4D 5D ultrasound,” they’re usually looking for exactly this: a live session where you watch your baby move with lifelike detail.

What is the 8K image upgrade?

The HyperRealistic 8K Transformation is an optional add-on that turns your favorite images into ultra-detailed keepsakes. It requires the purchase of a 5D/HD ultrasound special. You can also add a Heartbeat Keepsake Animal. Learn more on our 8K and heartbeat keepsake services page.

When is the best time for a 3D/4D scan?

We recommend one 4D session between 26 and 34 weeks. Good images are possible after about 22 weeks. By this point, your baby has a little more fat under the skin, so facial features look fuller and clearer.

Image quality also depends on your baby’s position, gestational age, amniotic fluid and maternal body type. If baby is facing your back or hiding behind their hands, we’ll talk through your options. That’s exactly why our 5D/HD packages include a free repeat visit for shy babies.

How to prepare

  • Drink plenty of water in the days before your session.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that makes it easy to access your belly.
  • Plan up to an hour total. Sessions run 5 to 25 minutes depending on the package, plus time to choose and print photos.

3D ultrasound vs newborn: will my baby look the same?

Many parents are amazed by how closely their baby’s newborn face resembles their 3D or 5D/HD images, especially the nose, lips and cheeks. Still, expect some differences. Ultrasound images are rendered in warm tones rather than true skin color, and babies’ faces change as they grow. Newborns can also look a bit puffy for the first few days after birth.

Think of your ultrasound images as a sweet preview, not a portrait. The real-life meeting is always its own surprise.

Is an elective 4D ultrasound a replacement for my doctor’s ultrasound?

No. Our scans are elective and non-diagnostic. To book with us, you need to already be under prenatal care and have had a diagnostic ultrasound ordered by your provider. During early scans, we only demonstrate and document the existence of a heartbeat. If our staff ever suspect a possible abnormality, we notify your doctor.

Our practice is overseen by a board-certified OB/GYN. For any question about your health or your baby’s development, please talk with your own provider. You’ll find more answers about safety and timing on our elective ultrasound FAQ page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5D ultrasound better than a 4D ultrasound?

Both show your baby moving live. 5D/HD adds realistic lighting and shading, so images often look more natural. Whichever you choose, your baby’s position and stage of pregnancy have the biggest effect on image quality.

Can I get a 3D or 4D ultrasound early in pregnancy?

Early on, 2D gives the clearest first look, which is why our Early Connection scan (6 to 11 weeks) uses 2D with an HD sneak peek when possible. For detailed 3D/4D faces, good images are possible after about 22 weeks, with 26 to 34 weeks recommended.

Does insurance cover elective 3D/4D ultrasounds?

No. Insurance does not cover elective scans. We accept cash, Mastercard and Visa, and you’ll get a discounted price when you pay online.

How long does a 4D ultrasound appointment take?

Scanning lasts 5 to 25 minutes depending on your package. Plan up to an hour in total so you have time to choose and print your photos.

Can my family come to the session?

Yes. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend and share the moment with you.
