Yes, 30 weeks is one of the best times for a 5D/HD ultrasound. By now most babies have filled out enough to show rounder cheeks and more defined features, and they usually still have room to move. That is why we recommend one 4D session between 26 and 34 weeks. At Moms To Be Ultrasound in Orlando, our Premium 5D/HD Experience is a 25-minute session ideal for 26 to 40 weeks.

If you’re in your third trimester and wondering what a bonding scan looks like, here’s a friendly walkthrough. It covers timing, what happens in the room, what affects your pictures and how to get ready.

Why is 30 weeks a good time for a 5D ultrasound?

Earlier in pregnancy, babies are leaner and their features look more delicate on a 3D image. As the third trimester goes on, babies typically build up fat under the skin. That gives the face the soft, chubby look many parents hope to see.

At around 30 weeks, many babies have filled out but haven’t run out of space yet. That balance makes it easier to catch yawns, stretches, little hands near the face and other sweet moments in real time.

When is the best time to do a 4D ultrasound?

Our general guidance is simple. We recommend one 4D session between 26 and 34 weeks, and good images are often possible after about 22 weeks. Here is how the weeks tend to play out:

Before 26 weeks

You can see your baby moving, and faces are visible. Features are usually thinner, though. If you’re earlier along, our 19-week 4D ultrasound guide explains what that stage looks like.

26 to 34 weeks: the sweet spot

This is the window we recommend for a single 4D session. Babies have filled out, and there is usually still enough fluid and room around the face for clear views.

After 34 weeks

Lovely scans are still very possible late in pregnancy, which is why the Premium package is listed for 26 to 40 weeks. As space gets tighter, though, babies may tuck their faces against the placenta, the uterine wall or their own hands and feet. A little extra time and patience can help. For a full week-by-week breakdown, see our article on the best weeks for 3D, 4D and 5D/HD ultrasound.

3D, 4D and 5D/HD in the third trimester: what’s the difference?

  • 3D shows a still, three-dimensional image of your baby.
  • 4D is 3D in motion, so you watch your baby move live.
  • 5D/HD uses enhanced rendering with lighting and skin-tone effects to create a more lifelike look.

In the third trimester, all three benefit from the same thing: a well-positioned baby with some fluid in front of the face. Our sessions use the GE Voluson E8, an FDA-approved prescription ultrasound device. You can browse real examples in our image gallery.

What happens during a third-trimester bonding scan at our Orlando studio?

Before you arrive

All services are by appointment, and we don’t accept walk-ins. You must already be under prenatal care and have had a diagnostic ultrasound ordered by your provider. Our studio is at 6000 Turkey Lake Road, Suite 200, just off I-4 and across from Universal Studios. That makes it an easy drive from around Orlando.

During the session

You’ll get comfortable in our softly lit scan room while your family settles in to watch. Fabio, our owner and ultrasound technician, will look for your baby’s face and best angles. Along the way you’ll hear the heartbeat and get your baby’s estimated weight, height and position. In the Premium session, the extra time often means more chances to catch expressions and movements.

After the scan

Sessions run 5 to 25 minutes depending on the package. Plan for up to an hour at the studio in total so there’s time to choose photos and get them printed. You’ll leave with printed photos plus all your digital images and videos.

What affects image quality, and what if baby is shy?

Every baby is different, and no one can promise a perfect profile on a given day. Image quality can depend on:

  • Baby’s position. A baby facing your back or hiding behind hands or feet is harder to capture.
  • Gestational age. This is why the 26 to 34 week window works so well.
  • Amniotic fluid. A pocket of fluid in front of the face helps create clear images.
  • Maternal body type. Extra tissue can make imaging more challenging.

If a scan turns out to be difficult, our staff will talk you through our policies. With the Sweet Peek and Premium packages, you get a complimentary repeat visit if baby is shy. That takes a lot of pressure off the day.

How should you prepare for a 30-week 3D/4D ultrasound?

  • Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to your belly, such as a two-piece outfit.
  • Plan your time. Allow up to an hour for the scan, photo selection and printing.
  • Pay online to save. Discounted prices apply when you pay online. In the studio we accept cash, Mastercard and Visa. Insurance does not cover elective scans.

Can grandparents and siblings come to the scan?

Absolutely. Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend. A third-trimester scan is often the first time grandparents get to see the baby’s face. Watching a big brother or sister spot their sibling yawning on the screen is a moment many families talk about for years.

Ivania and Fabio, a mother-and-son team, have run the studio since 2008 and have helped more than 35,000 families. We treat every mom like family. We also offer Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking support, so everyone in your group can follow along.

Does an elective scan replace my prenatal ultrasounds?

No. Our sessions are elective and non-diagnostic. They complement, not replace, the scans your provider orders. We demonstrate and document only the existence of a heartbeat. If staff suspect a possible abnormality, we notify your doctor. Please bring any health questions to your provider, and visit our FAQ page for more on safety and policies.

How do I book my third-trimester scan in Orlando?

Choose your package and book on our website, or call us at (407) 704-7997. We’re open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, and we close daily for lunch from 12 to 1 pm. If you’re aiming for 30 weeks, book a little ahead so you land right in that 26 to 34 week sweet spot.
